Gas Laws Quiz

I felt fairly confident heading into this quiz. Going through every lecture, I felt like all of the lessons were pretty understandable. The math is usually what trips me up, but I really seemed to understand these equations. The quiz wasn't terrible, it felt average. I got a 68% which really isn't that bad. I really want to improve for the test, and do anything to keep my grade from heading south.

Air Bag Lab

When this lab was first explained, I was in shock. I thought how in the world am I supposed to create my own lab out of virtually nothing. With a little help from my friends and the internet, it got easier. It was very exciting and relieving to have my air bag pass the test. It was a good lab.

The Ideal Gas Laws

An ideal gas law is modeled on the Kinetic Theory of Gases which has four postulates.

  • Gases consist of small particles which are in continuous motion.
  • The volume of the molecules present is negligible compared to the total volume occupied by the gas.
  • Intermolecular forces are negligible.
  • Pressure is due to the gas molecules colliding with the walls of the container.
Real gases are different. They deviate from Ideal Gas Behavior because at low temperatures the gas molecules have less kinetic energy so they attract each other. In addition, at high pressures the gas molecules are forced closer together so that the volume of the gas molecules become significant compared to the volume the gas occupies.

Finally, the equation used to represent the Ideal Gas Law is: PV=nRT

First Two Gas Laws

First we learned about the characteristics of gases. They expand spontaneously, they are highly compressible, and are homogeneous mixtures. In the first gas law, Boyle's Law, we keep temperature and miles constant. Giving us the equation P1•V1=P2•V2. In the second gas law, Charles' Law, we keep the moles and pressure constant, giving us the equation V1•T2=V2•T2. These first two lectures have been fairly easy and that gives me confidence for this quiz on Thursday.

The energy and phase changes unit was a fairly simple one. As the unit was only one week long, we ran through the lessons and labs quickly, which was kind of difficult going through all of the information so fast. Although the information was pretty easy, it was difficult to memorize all of the information so fast, but it turned out okay. I prepared a lot for the test the night before, which was good for me, as I got a 95% on the test. Overall, this unit was a success, so I am happy.

Energy and Phase Changes Unit Exam

This exam was pretty swell. I managed to get a 70% which is pretty darn good for myself. I cannot wait for this class to end. This class has caused me unhealthy amounts of stress, and I have to keep up the good score going into the last test of the year.

Biodiesel Unit Conclusion

This unit was fantastic. It was awesome to take a break from the constant lectures and tests. Both the cartoon and the boat were a blast. It was an opportunity to be creative and have fun, and even make some money. Activities that are educational, fun, and give you the opportunity for easy points are what make the world go round.

Biodiesel Boat

My partner, Jameisia, and I were having a hard time thinking of a design for our boat. Eventually, we created a boat out of a milk carton. We faced some obstacles throughout the building process, but when the test came around we succeeded. Our boat wasn't fast by any means, but it got the job done. That's all that matters :)

Biodiesel Project

Our biodiesel project was outstanding in my opinion. We made a cartoon video that had a different characteristic for every letter in biodiesel. For example, B stood for biodegradable. Our video was short, sweet and to the point. Hopefully we will get more people to use biodiesel and get some moolah.

Lecture Supplements

The chemical bonding was somewhat difficult. So many tips and tricks to find the chemical makeup and the small little exceptions to every rule that we have to know. So that is a little tricky to determine when to use each rule and when the exceptions apply.

New Unit

Starting off a new unit, and putting the entire third quarter behind me. I began the third quarter with an incredibly rough start. It's so bad that we don't need to discuss it. I ended strong though with an 80% on my last test! Which is incredible for my standards.

This unit's first lecture was about Lewis' structure and how to draw electron dot diagrams and show bonds and lone pairs. We also learned the Have, Need, Share method to draw and figure out electrons.

Unit Test

I wanted to do a post about the exam of this unit, but the results weren't very "good". My test score was close to the freezing temperature of water in Fahrenheit. I think that's enough said. I'm going to go cry in a corner and do better on the next test.
